Over 75 years old, Theatre BC (The British Columbia Drama Association)is one of Canada's most dynamic provincial arts organizations.
Mission Statement: To promote and encourage the development of community theatre in British Columbia by providing leadership and shared opportunities for participation in, education about, and the enjoyment of diverse theatre experiences.
Recently we have been talking with our counterparts at Theatre Alberta. Vance has been in touch with them and had several good dialogues with them about their organization. Of particular interest is their 18,000 title library, and their online library check in/out tools. As a result of those conversations, Vance has been looking into how we can get recognized as a library, as they are, which can save us significantly in postage. Or we might be able to work out a way to share titles in both of our libraries. They have a wonderful website http://urlin.it/225f1 (that is an abbreviation because the full text is too long, but click on that and it will take you to their site) that includes a listing of all theatre coming up that week, a classified section including job boards, resource info and so on. We hope to have a face to face meeting with them at some point, and since I am in Edmonton a couple of times a month on business hopefully we will be able to arrange something.
Development is moving along on our website. The first priority is to enable it for electronic commerce, so that we can sell memberships and then of course Mainstage registration online. Rick and Jeffrey are hard at work for those changes, with a Dec 31st deadline. We have signed up with Beanstream, which is a merchant gateway based in Victoria. So stay tuned for those changes, and a lot more coming after that. One of my goals is to eliminate the package that we send out every year to our member clubs, by having everything in that package available online. Recognizing how important our website is as a communications vehicle, we have asked Richard to include a modest amount as an annual budgetary line item for continuing development.
In mid November the Executive met in North Vancouver for a planning session. Participating were Glen, Randy, Penny, Richard, Vance and Cara (the last 3 by Skype, which worked quite well and helped keep our costs down) - Ray was in rehearsals and was not able to attend. This is part of the rebuilding process as we look to increasing our self sufficiency through increased Mainstage revenue, and as we have seen some restorations of grant funding. On the agenda was a discussion about the vision for the next three years and how to achieve that, a review of our financials (which thankfully as noted above is looking better), potential ticketing solutions, and the website plans currently underway as well as the future of the websites. We also discussed our value proposition - what we offer to clubs and to members. We discussed our festivals, including the idea about making Mainstage into more of a destination festival. Another topic of discussion was our communications and what we can learn by partnering with other groups such as Theatre Alberta. It was a good session and good prep for our upcoming Board camp in January. Vance and Amy are working on arrangements for that as we speak (well not Saturday morning when I am writing this but like next week)
Well we have an interesting dilemma regarding a host hotel for Mainstage. It turns out that our former host hotel, the Coast, which was conveniently located downtown just steps away from the Cultural Centre and Coffee Critiques (yes I still drove there, but I had the excuse that I was Anne Marsh's driver for the week) is no longer operating. The Coast franchise has gone up the hill and is now the Coast Hotel and Conference Centre at 1250 Rogers Way Centre. Vance and I recently got a tour whilst it was under construction, it is a very nice facility and the theatre could be a venue for the Awards Night. So Vance is currently working to receive proposals from potential host hotels and we will keep you posted. When I have been in Kamloops on TBC business I have been trying different hotels to check out the options (and of course taste testing their associated restaurants)
